When my first baby, Amber was born, we were advised by her Pedia to let Amber undergo Newborn Screening . Just like Ariella, the Newborn Screening result was negative. The tests performed were the following:
- Congenital Hypothyroidism
- Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
- Galactosemia
- Phenylketonuria
- Glucose-6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency.
The Newborn Screening was actually carried out in this address:
Philippine Newborn Screening Program
Newborn Screening Center Visayas
West Visayas State University Medical Center
Jaro, Iloilo City, Philippines
So to all parents out there, I recommend that you let your baby be screened :-) IT'S IMPORTANT! WHY? Please read below:
Because Newborn Screening is a simple procedure to find out if your baby has a congenital metabolic disorder that may lead to mental retardation or even death if left untreated... By doing newborn screening, metabolic disorders may be detected even before clinical signs and symptoms become present. And as a result of this, treatment can be given to prevent the consequences of untreated conditions... :-)
